Products classified as hazardous materials (hazmat) or ORM-D (Other Regulated Materials - Domestic)—such as perfumes, aerosol cans, batteries, or flammable liquids—require specific handling and strict transportation compliance. This guide explains what you need to provide to MasonHub to get these products approved for fulfillment and how the shipping process works.
Prerequisites for Setup
Before a dangerous goods SKU can be approved for shipping, MasonHub must conduct a formal safety review. You must provide the following documentation to your Onboarding Specialist or Client Success Manager (CSM) for every hazmat SKU:
- Safety Data Sheet (SDS): A complete SDS/MSDS is mandatory. Section 14 (Transport Information) must be accurate and complete. If the product contains alcohol, the exact alcohol content must be documented.
- Net Quantity: The exact volume or weight of the hazardous material within the individual product.
- Product Image: A clear photo of the final retail packaging.
The Setup Process
The setup for dangerous goods involves multiple layers of review to ensure safety and carrier compliance.
1. Documentation Submission
Send your SDS sheets and product details to your MasonHub point of contact. They will add your items to our internal Hazmat Appendix for formal review.
2. Technical Review
The MasonHub Dangerous Goods Team reviews each SKU against DOT (ground) and IATA (air) regulations. They determine the hazard class, required safety labeling, and packaging needs (such as leakage bags or bubble wrap).
- Timeline: Simple reviews typically take 1–5 business days. Complex items may take up to a week if external specialists are required.
3. SKU Classification in OMS
Once the review is approved, the CSM mark the SKU as ORMD within the MasonHub OMS if it hasn't been already.
4. Test Orders
Before going live, MasonHub requires test orders for all new hazmat SKUs. This ensures that the system correctly applies the required shipping rules and that the warehouse team is prepared for the specific packaging requirements.
⚠️ Important: No hazmat SKU may be shipped until the full review is complete and test orders have been approved.
Shipping Capabilities & Restrictions
Hazardous materials are subject to strict carrier limitations. Please plan your shipping strategy based on the following guidelines:
Domestic Shipping (U.S. 48 Contiguous States)
DTC hazmat orders are restricted to Ground shipping only. The following services are supported:
- DHL Ground
- UniUni (limited hazmat coverage)
- UPS Ground
Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. Territories
Shipping to AK, HI, PR, and VI is highly restricted. DHL Ground is currently the only supported service for these destinations. This also includes PO Boxes.
International Ground to Canada
Shipping ground to Canada is restricted to the below services and does not require manual documentation (Shipping Declarations).
- DHL International Priority (DDP only)
- Passport Priority (DDP only)
- Global-E
- UPS Standard
International and Air Shipments
Air and international shipments carry significant regulatory burdens and require manual documentation (Shipping Declarations).
- DTC International (Beyond ground to Canada): Currently not supported for hazardous materials.
- Wholesale International: Supported on a case-by-case basis for select clients and requires approval from the MasonHub Operations Team. These orders are subject to ad-hoc charges due to the manual labor involved.
PO Boxes and Military Addresses
Shipping to PO Boxes and military bases are only support by DHL Ground, to the 48 states, and some non-contiguous states and territories (AK, HI, PR, and VI only).
- Hazmat to overseas military addresses are not supported per USPS regulations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my SDS is incomplete?
The Dangerous Goods Team cannot approve a SKU without a complete Section 14. If information is missing, your CSM will ask you to provide a corrected SDS from your manufacturer, which will delay the setup process
Can I expedite a hazmat shipment?
No. Hazardous materials cannot be placed on a plane for standard DTC orders. If a customer selects an expedited air method at checkout, the order will be held or rejected to maintain compliance.
Do I need to provide special packaging?
MasonHub recommends strong outer packaging for most items
