Use Cases
Orders with backordered items
If a customer order is placed and at least one item is backordered and one item is physically available, this function can split orders into multiple fulfillments allowing the available items to ship immediately and the backordered items to ship upon inventory receipt.
Only orders with Customer as the order type and at least one backordered unit are eligible to be split. For example, we prevent Wholesale orders from being split.
Orders spanning multiple facilities
Shopify sees MasonHub inventory in aggregate across all warehouses. If an order is placed with available items but cannot be fulfilled out of a single facility, the order will need to be split into multiple fulfillments routed to the appropriate physical locations.
Learn more about our multiple locations here.
Please note: Kits cannot be split across multiple fulfillments in either use case. All kit components will stay bundled together in a single fulfillment. |
There is no limit to the number of times an order can be split; as long as it's eligible, it can be split multiple times. For example, an order may have 1 available SKU and 2 backordered SKUs. After the initial split, the order will have 2 fulfillments: the allocated fulfillment with one item, and the backordered fulfillment with two items. If one backordered SKU receives inventory before the other, this fulfillment can then be split again resulting in an order with three fulfillments.
If you're interested in splitting backorders and / or shipping out of both our facilities, contact your MasonHub Account Manager to turn on the appropriate settings. |
Order Split Policies
Customer orders can be split into multiple fulfillments either automatically (recommended) or manually. Work with your Account Manager to ensure you have the desired setting applied to your account.
(Recommended) Default Order Split Policy: Auto
When this setting is applied, all orders that come into MasonHub's OMS will automatically be split. (We have a backend process that runs four times a day to check for and split all eligible orders: 5:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 11:59 a.m., 1:00 PM and 11:00 p.m PST.)
Default Order Split Policy: Manual
If you do not want all orders automatically split, you can elect to set the policy as manual. When this setting is applied, you can still split individual orders with the Split Fulfillment button on the order detail page.
Go to the Fulfillment you want to split. In the Actions menu, select Split Fulfillment.
Once the order has been split, you’ll see two fulfillments on the order detail page.
In this example, the available items split off and were sent to the Warehouse Management System (WMS) to be fulfilled. The remaining items were backordered.
